Hi, I’m Richard Fairgray, creator of comics & picture books, designer of at least one album cover and the brilliant mind behind the most under-appreciated twitter account on the entire internet. I’ve been making books since I learned to write and draw and now have somewhere over 250 published titles to my name.
Originally from New Zealand, I’m now splitting my time between Surrey, BC (Canada) and Los Angeles. I spend my days drawing comics like BLASTOSAURUS, BLACK SAND BEACH, CARDBOARDIA, GHOST GHOST and a slew of other titles that I haven’t shown anyone yet. I take occasionally breaks to make really top quality jokes on twitter that receive almost 2 likes! You should check those out, as well as all my books.
When there’s not a global pandemic underway I like to travel and talk about comics and storytelling to people of all ages. A sentence like that is a sure sign of how regularly I update this bio. For more regular updates you should go laugh at my twitter goofs.
The first story I ever wrote got me in a lot of trouble. I was three years old and I had taped a bunch of paper together to make a book. It took me almost a whole day to write and draw because I had to keep running outside to ask my dad how to spell the words. The story was about Donald Duck going to a haunted house. He was meant to meet Mickey there in the morning, but Mickey didn’t show up (much in the same way that celebrities and influencers don’t show up for my twitter gold). Donald went into the house alone and met a lonely ghost. The ghost told Donald that he had no friends and Donald realized that the two of them had that in common. Then Donald shot himself in the face so that he could be a ghost and they could be friends forever.
When I wrote that I thought it was a happy ending. My kindergarten teacher (we start that earlier in New Zealand) didn’t agree and I wasn’t allowed to eat any Play-Doh that whole day.
Since then I’ve been determined to keep writing stories about all the things I don’t see in other books, especially if those are stories about ghosts, skeletons, dinosaurs or kids speaking up against adults.

I've been making comics for a really long time and I've made a lot of them, mostly in New Zealand and mostly out of print and lost on hard drives during the dark ages before cloud storage. What you'll find on this site is a deep dive into the last ten years of my work, with a mix of short and long comics and stories. All up it's about half of what I've had published.
